Being a cop in not a popularity contest. A cop that is more interested in political correctness is more concerned with being promoted. I was told by an old vet street cop that you have to make a choose either you want to be a cop or you want to be promoted. I have seen very few street cops advance past Sgt. In order to get the bad guys you have to kick *** and not worried who's toes you step on. I truly believe that the cause of the spike in crime over the decade is the lack of real cops, just college kids that want to be chief and look good on the front page.

A good Top Cop walks a line between law and politics, personal ethics are important. But this having been said, if you can't Stay in position, you can't be very effective in your position.

Some Chiefs, are simply hired, some have to run for the office.

Same with D A's.

It depends upon where you are.

As a Chief, your first job is the safety of your officers, this deals with funding, and almost all Chiefs have to play a few political games in this regard.

Cop's didn't invent the system, and they have done a fine job of protecting it, and us for a very long time.

There's one answer for every question involving police work... "it depends."

If he's surrounded by a bunch of other politically correct cops than he won't be effective at all.

If he's working with more direct officers then he'll be extremely effective. Police work as a unit, often times even on traffic stops. The best departments are the ones that have a shitload of different kinds of officers.

uhmmm-- not sure exactly what is meant by "politically correct cop" --- but ...

It is definitely an effective police tactic to use what is called "Verbal stunning."

Imagine a bad guy with a knife who is approaching a cop. The cop can shoot the bad guy, but before it comes to that the cop instead screams "Drop the f***ing knife you f***ing idiot!!!! You want to bring a f***ing knife to a gun fight a**hole???!!!!!!" The bad guy hesitates long enough for the cop's partner to get behind the bad guy and whack him in the head with his baton. The bad guy gets a concussion instead of getting blown away.

If you're asking should a cop have that kind of language at the ready, then I would say definitely. (But then, you might prefer the bad guy get blown away. But that's probably not PC)

I don't believe it is possible to be politically correct for anyone, someone will always find fault. The best Police Officer is one who follows the law him or herself and expects the same from everybody, no matter how large their bank accounts may be.

we've come a long way from my good buddy Archie Bunker.

in my opinion political correctness has given certain sects in society the opportunity to reverse prejudice. and as for a cop to go with these trappings ...............how bizarre!!

No reason why he shouldn't be. He doesn't need to call people names to make an arrest or conduct an investigation.
