Why is it even necessary? If God really exists, shouldn't worshipping him and asking his forgiveness be enough? Does anyone, particularily Jesus, really have to die for atonement?

Because God is just.

If a person is guilty of a multitude of crimes, but walks into court and says, "Oh, I'm sorry Judge - it won't happen again", do you think the judge will say, "Oh well, since you're sorry, you can go free"? What about the people the criminal hurt/stole from/killed etc? In order for justice to be served, the crime needs to be punished. Letting people get off scot-free would be immoral.

Well, because God is just, he must punish sin, even if the person is sorry. But because God also loves us, he made a way where we could be with him, but he could still punish sin - i.e., Jesus dying in our place, taking the punishment we deserved.

Hope this answers your question.

Can you give more info. Jesus did more than atone, He distroyed it, atonement only covers sin for a season.
