Anyone have a home remedy? I have a pinched nerve that when flared up, makes my "boys" feel like someone is stepping on them, and the pain goes all the way to my big toe. I've had epidurals, but I've had too many recently, so the doc has cut me off. Prednisone helps, but I know it's not good for you. The biggest problem is when I'm driving, not walking or working. I have all kinds of wedges and cushions for my seat, but they don't last but 35 minutes or so. What can I do at home to help? Ice? Heat? Stretching?

I take peroxicam daily, but it doesn't help. Again, No problem working or standing, but by the time I'm done with my 90 minute commute, it feels like someone is standing on my testicles. It also feels like someone has their fist clenched around my lower back muscle squeezing it.

I actually went to a chiro first, and he didin't even mention a pinched nerve. All he did was shoot me along my spine with a plastic toy gun, and charge me $20 per visit. Meanwhile, the pain got worse to the point I had to go to a sport and spine clinic, where I had MRI's done that showed my disk condition.

I also tried "physical therapy" where a 20 year old girl twisted and contorted my legs and back around like a pretzel. All I have left from those sessions is a lighter wallet, and a right hamstring that feels like it may snap if I even think about running. That was 10 months ago, the hammy is still "broken".

It sounds like the real problem is you're not getting good pain management through pain medications. Your doctor should prescribe a narcotic type medication called Oxycontin. This is good to take when you are in so much pain you need instant release. You don't have to worry about addiction unless you are the type to abuse the drug or just take it for the "high" feeling. If you use it for what it was intended (pain relief) you'll have a higher quality of Life because you'll be able to do and enjoy more activities. Other than that, massages work great. Avoid Chiropractic care.

You should check this Sciatica Natural Treatment
http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

I also have bad disc in my back(5).When the pain gets to bad I warm up the area then do stretching exercises that you can get from your physical therapist if you have one or have doctor refer you. I have found heat works best for me but some use ice,anti-inflammitory medication(Motrin,Aleve, etc.)you can try a chiropractor. The pain when driving is caused by compressing the vertebrae in the back and pressing the nerve.
The fitness center that I use is through my work uses the fitness balls for stretching and to rebuild the muscles in the back also mild sit up for better control of stomach muscles to help with better back support. Is not an overnight thing and has to worked on daily.
I have even went to pain center and had some relief first couple of times, then the pain came back worse because of the shots into the disc area.
Hope some of this can work for you and you need to speak with a doctor before trying any of this.It is what has worked for me.I know that this is something that I will have to live with, but no narcotics or missed work for 3 months now .

I've been there and it's not fun! Here are some no cost options to try: 1) if it's a pinched nerve, don't use heat because it may aggravate it/inflame it. Use ice. Put some ice or frozen peas in a bag in a towel or washcloth and place it on that area for as long as you can stand it (maybe 10 minutes or so). Wait a few minutes and do it again. You may have to move it around a little, so it's not constantly in the same spot. You need to do this several times a day! I agree with "Faith" that medical doctors really don't understand back pain..."not stretching" is nuts! Try this: 2) if you live with someone, lay on your back on your bed with your feet hanging off the edge. (it's easiest if you lay on your bed from side to side, rather than the direction you normally would lay). Have someone GENTLY tug on both of your legs (at the same time). It's easier for them to hold on to you if you have some shoes on, like sneakers or a snug shoe. This tugging should feel good because it allows the discs to separate a bit and relieves the pressure on the nerve (the nerve fits between the discs). Sometimes, if you're lucky, the nerve will move the slightest bit and will actually relieve some of the pain. This simulates the idea of traction on your spine. 3) After you've done that, have your friend/spouse walk around to your head and GENTLY tug on both of your arms (both arms at the same time). While they do this, take a deep breath and let it all out. You'll find that the deep breathing allows for a more complete stretch. This should also feel awesome on your back/disc. 4) If you possibly can, lay on your back on the carpeted floor. Gently pull one knee up to your chest and hold it there. You may need someone else to help you with this if you are in major pain. Put that one down and do the other knee. Then you could try to lift both knees up to your chest at the same time and GENTLY roll side to side. 5) Another good stretch: stand up and GENTLY allow your hands to drop down towards the floor (so that you are trying to touch your toes). Stay there and keep deep breathing. Each time you exhale, allow your body to "fall" a little deeper. Hang like a limp rag doll. Sometimes this feels really good on your back. 6) As for pain, can you take ibuprofin with your other medication? If so, take two 200 mg tablets to help reduce some of the inflammation and the pain. 7) Check on the internet to see if there are any chiropractic schools or massage therapy schools in your area that you could get a reduced rate for treatment. I feel SOOO bad for you! No one understands that pain unless they've experienced it! Try these and let me know how they work for you.

I know how you feel. I went to the doctor a few days ago with groin, back and SI (hip) pain. I was suprised when he told me the two pains were related and I that I should go see a chiropractor. I went to the chiropractor today and he said it was due to a pinched nerve in my low back that was causing my groin pain and leg weakness/pain. He adjusted my back, hip and groin. I'm still in pain, lol I've had the hip/back pain for years, but the groin pain was new. I wonder if I have a bulging disc now too. I never knew groin pain was a symptom. I had SI pain releif years ago with massage therapy.

I have the same problem, mine's an injury from when I was in the Army. I have pain when I am standing and walking but not sitting. What I have found that helps is taking a hot bath, ice packs on my back, and naproxen or ibuprofen.

I had this in my neck last summer. Try to keep the disk immoble, ice it and take up to 4 ibuprofin (that's prescription strength) to help with the swelling/inflamation. Keeping still is really important.

Hmm...maybe icy-hot or biofreeze on your back?
I'm not sure how that would work, worth trying though
Are you going to a plain doctor, or a chiropractor?
If you aren't seeing a chiropractor, I would definitely recommend it!
A good one can be life changing!
Good luck! :]
