i like this girl and were good acquaintances, but i dont see her much during the day. she is really nice but hangs out with people i dont know very well (not in a bad way, i just dont know them). any ideas on sparking up the conversations?

Try to catch her while she's alone...some girls like showing off just like guys...or it could be her friends taking your spotlight... So try out by asking her to go with you to the venting machine or anywhere and you can begin talking about something you know she will enjoy talking about... and definately compliment her...women LOVE compliments...Why do you think we dress all sexy and stuff? Lol.
Don't be nervous, talk to her smoothly and confidently....and try to make time to see her more.. you want her to know she's intrested and that's definately one way.
Another thing, if you do end up going out with her..make sure you are chilvarous and traditional... alot of men forget flowers melt a girls heart for the night :)
