Churches are non-profit organizations, and as such, exempt from such taxes.

If you wish to have churches pay taxes, then do so likewise to non-profit hospitals, community arts centers, schools, orphanages and any other organization that currently pays no tax.

Most all churches provide services to communities that people don't recognize. The Catholic church runs hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, counseling centers, schools and much much more.

I'm not a fan of the Christian religion, but I recognize that they offer tremendous services to society that most faithless folk will never come close to.

That's not an indictment against all who disagree with religion. I do understand that many are generous, but it's not all, and likely not most. I'm also willing to bet that when most people arguing that churches ought pay taxes will certainly get a tax ID number when making large donations, and will likely claim charitable contributions on their tax forms.

If you wish to remove the tax exempt status of a church, then show it is not worthy of such.

I can't see how taxing the Salvation Army would benefit anyone . They are devoted to helping tragic victims of every disaster and help the homeless as well. They take care of a lot of people all around the world. If they were taxed it would be like taking money away from helping those who really need the help. They are just one example of what most churches do. If they are taxed then all non-prophet organizations would have to be taxed and many of them would no longer be able to help people.

This is not as easy question to answer as it may seem. When a church does a decent job in the community then they should not have to pay taxes as they are already giving back to the community. (BTW, I'm an Atheist and I stand by the previous sentence.) However, when you see these smarmy people on TV like Pat Robertson, Joel Osteen, and Robert Tilton, then those whe gain money through TV should have to pay just as any company on TV would.

I don't think they should. My church gives back to the community. But if a church is being greedy, God will take care of it.
