The rule of thumb for puppy training is to go by their age. Since your pup is 8 months old he will most likely poo every 8 hours. The best thing you can do is crate train him. If you have a large crate put it in the section of the house that he likes to poo. When he's not outside or you aren't supervising him leave him in the crate, especially at night. Most animals will not use the restroom where they lay down, play or sleep. After he's been in the crate for several hours without using the bath room, take him out side. If he will not go number two outside take him back inside and place him back in the crate. Make sure he's had plenty of food and water. He will eventually need to go number two. At which point he will be forced to go outside. Make sure you take him to a secluded area that may be shaded- believe it or not a lot of dogs get nervous in areas that are open with people or other animals around. When he finally goes number two praise him and let him know that he did everything right. After two weeks of him staying in the crate and going number two outside give him a trial run in the house. Be sure that if he poops in the house you immediatly take him outdoors then place him back in the crate. Pretty soon he will get use to using the restroom outdoors that going indoors will no longer apease to him. Also keep him on a regular feeding schedule, once in the morning, once at night. Do not let him free range feed from a feeder- over eating is the number one cause of dogs using the restroom in the house. Feeding him on a schedule will also give you a closer bond to your dog.

I've had both a cocker spaniel and a chihuahua. The chihuahua was 1 1/2 years old when we got her. Having a doggie door if possible, is a great answer.(but only if you have a fenced in backyard) They like being able to go in and out when the need arises. With a puppy, you take then out after they wake up, 15 minutes after you feed and/or water them, and about 15-20 minutes after they have been playing. Saty out there with them until they go. Try and leave a "pile" on the grass for them to smell and this will give them the idea of what they are out there for. Good luck! Eventually it will work.

we had the same problem with our puppy too. what we had to do finally (it was rigorous but it worked), was take her outside every hour while firmly saying "potty OUTSIDE" for 2o minutes, or until she went. now, whenever we say, "do you need to go potty OUTSIDE?" she will walk to the door for us to let her out if she needs to go. good luck, puppies are tricky!
