Depression is a mood disorder that causes you to feel sad or hopeless for an extended period of time. We now know that depression, like other medical conditions, has a chemical and biological basis. Treatment for depression is safe and usually effective even for severely depressed people.

More than just a bout of "the blues" or temporary feelings of grief or low energy, depression can have a significant impact on your enjoyment of life, your work, your health, and the people you care about.

Depression affects people differently. Some feel down for extended periods of time; for others the feelings of depression come and go. If you have short episodes of mild depression, you may be able to continue to work and take care of daily activities. However, if you do not seek some form of treatment for your depression, you are at risk for getting more depressed or becoming physically ill. In severe cases, depression can cause people to become incapable of communicating, unable to do routine activities, or suicidal. In these cases, it is essential to seek medical attention.

I have had depression for many years, only recenly realized I've been fighting it, rather than using it to my advantage & allowing nature takes its course, I feel when u have been hurt too much, u go into a shell, close urself to protect urself from more hurt. This shutting down, closing down on emotions is much needed & I have just realized I don't have 2 force myslef 2 b "happy",pretending that everything is ok when I don;t feel that way.I think this is depression.not just feeling the blues, but feeling my own real emotions of pain, sadness over what has been,& all my "unhappy" emotions.

It's an imbalance of serotonin in the brain which can cause you to feel upset, fatigued, unmotivated, irritable and even suicidal more than the average person.
Depression can also be caused by other things such as bullying, traumas, severe family problems, abuse, death, and many others. Depression can also vary in severity from "the blues", to having to be hospitalized.
