I believe the answer why humans live longer than cats is the gestation period between the cat vs the human. As humans we have a gestation period of usually 9 months while a cat has a gestation period of 60 days or so. For some reason the longer the gestation the longer the lifespan of the animal. That's why a bug dies in a few weeks because the gestation period is a couple of days and a humpback whale lives for 95 years since it's gestation is a year.

Most animals have different lifespans - my uneducated guess is that this was the optimum lifespan that allowed the younger generation to 'take over' as it were - without competing for food with older animals. In the wild the smaller cats live less years of age on average and tend to breed often and early - while the bigger ones breed less often, but live longer. It depends, I would say, on their environment and the availability of food and also how easy it is for them to raise their young. Most of the smaller cats I know of can raise young very quickly (about 6 months or so) while the larger ones take some years.

Also domestic cats are dumb as bricks and they do get runned over a lot XD Actually, feral and domestic cats are killed by snakes (at least in australia) more often than not - as well as their young get eaten by other mammal predators (like quolls in australia).

however - yes, it's all about what worked in Evolutionary terms.

I think metabolism had a lot to do with lifespan - however I can't say how or why or even whether it was the other way around. ^__^

cats and dogs lifespan is on average much shorter than humans. Although, they are living longer than many years ago they their bodies age faster than humans and why they leave us sooner. It would be nice if they could live longer too.

my aunt had a cat who lived to be 22 years old. That is a long life in cat years. I guess that Cats were created to live full and happy lives, even though they are short ones

Well they grow a lot quicker than we do after a baby kitten is born within 3 days its teeth will start growing and within 45 days it will have all of its teeth as if you are a human it would take a couple months for your teeth to grow in they adapt quicker they learn quick but hard as we learn not as quick but easily
