Is it illegal to check the single box when you are married?

Does this depend on whether your spouse works?

Please I need correct information…Please do not guess!

You can put whatever you want on the W-4 form. If you are married and only one of you works, checking the single box will just mean that they will withhold more taxes from your wages than necessary.

The W-4 form is to tell your employer how many deductions you want taken out. This is how they formulate your tax on your check. The more deductions you claim, the more money they take out. The idea is to take out the most amount of deductions as possible, without having to pay taxes at the end of the year. That way you get to keep more of your money. The larger the refund you get, means you need to take more deductions on your W-4. That way the govt. keeps less of your money throughout the year.

Yes, check the correct box and then choose to file a joint return or file separately. Sounds like you need to see a tax professional!

Yes. You can, however, check the box that says "Married, filing separately" if s/he wants to file his/her own taxes.
