You cannot combine income from 2005 and 2006 onto one year's return. You can still file your 2005 return and get your $27 refund.

Since you are getting a refund, there will be no penalty or interest. Not filing for 2005 will not impact your 2006 return, so you can file 2006 now and 2005 later if you want.

No, you cannot report your 2005 information on your 2006 return in lieu of filing a 2005 tax return. Each year is treated separately. What you will need to do is to go to the IRS website and download the 2005 forms and file a paper return for 2005 (you can only e-file for the current year). If you are due a refund, you only have 3 years from the original due date of the return (April 15, 2006) in order to file a return and claim your refund. Once you are past that 3 year window, you cannot get your refund and you have just donated your refund to the US government.

You can file your 2005 return any time (you can claim a refund up to 3 years after the deadline without a penalty).

Call a professional like someone at Fiducial. They will answer your questions for free, and tell you whether you need to even file a return for last year.
