its plaque build up. try a toothpaste that has 12 hour plaque protection, like colgate total. its just a build up of food, and bacteria that exhists in our mouths. be sure to brush well after every meal, and before you go to bed! if its not removed by brushing, it can harden and cause gum disease. a good tooth brushing technique is the key in preventing gum disease and tooth decay. check out this website to learn a good tooth brushing technique...it will help alot!

It is plaque...and if you have been eating after bruhing and didn't rinse your mouth of the food, it can be brownish or black...especially if you smoke. A good brushing a should remove it....if not see a dentist.
