Avoid going through downtown, take the I-105 East to the I-605 North to the SR-60 east, It'll join the I-10 in Beaumont, from there take the I-10 to the 111 exit and you'll drive right into town. By going this way, you will avoid the downtown LA traffic and the horrendous I-10 traffic.

Probably looking at a two hour drive.
Take Sepulveda south to the 105 fwy East. Then the 605 South to the 91 East. Take the 60 East and it will merge eventually to the 10 Fwy. Hwy 111 will take you to Palm Springs.
Enjoy Southern California traffic. There's no way around it unless you own a helicopter or you fly to Palm Springs airport.

It can be sticky, traffic-wise....but the I-10 or the I-60 to the I-10 East is the best.
It's best to go East in the morning....as the traffic is in-bound toward L.A. in the early hours.
From LAX, I'd take the 105 east to the 605 north to the 60 or the 10 east. Listen to 1070 or 980 AM for traffic reports to determine whether the 60 or the 10 are the best bet.

From LAX you just need to take I-405 to I-10 and head East. Once you are out of the main part of LA it is pretty good traffic wise. Expect 2-3 hours during most of the time.
If you can try to change your flight to Ontario, CA you will be about an hour closer to Palm Springs. Also this airport is a lot easier to fly in/out of.

OK the only tricky part will be getting on I-10 north of the airport----when leaving LAX take the Federal Highway Interstate 405 north (red and blue sign you're used to) until you hit Interstate 10 east, it goes through L. A. to "THE SPRINGS" Plan on 3.5 hours from LAX...

I've honestly just always shot East on I-10 and just deal with the traffic... it's LA... unless you've got some sort of magical powers, there's really no way to get around the traffic without an airplane.
