My kitten just got spayed today and the vet advised me not to feed her until tomorrow morning. I realise I should have ask why not, but maybe someone on here could tell me. I feel bad having to lock her in her bedroom because I have another cat and a dog and I can't just hide all their food too. Could someone let me know why she shouldnt be eatting? And what would happen if she were to eat.
thanks

It's because the aftereffects of the anesthesia can make them vomit. If she seems hungry,I think you could offer her just a few teaspoons of canned food or a tiny bit of dry,or just some chicken broth if you have it.I always offer mine a little, but then my vet usually keeps an animal that's been spayed overnight. It won't hurt her to go without food until morning, though, and she might not even feel like eating as she is probably still a little hung-over from the anesthesia, and sore to boot.

I honestly don't know why the doctor insists on that, but I would assume it has something to do with the aneathesia, the animals stomach being empty, etc. The cat may just throw the food back up if you feed her and irritate her stitches or staples. Even if you gave the cat some food, I wonder if she would eat it. Probably not, she just won't feel like it. Not eating for a few more hours won't hurt her.

There are a couple of reasons for this one being that with a full tummy she may have to have a bowel movement and that would put stress on her inside organs and muscles which need to heal. You should however make sure she has a fresh bowl of water for her to drink from. Don't feel badly about segregating her. It is for her own good and just in case you feel guilty about not feeding her, its unlikely she would want to eat yet anyway. Good luck and good for you being such a responsible and caring owner.

She has just had surgery and the medication has more than likely made her nauseous and she will throw up and get very sick if she eats.
