I have to go with England in the 1800's. If you were found guilty of treason you would be hanged, drawn and quartered.
Until 1870, the full punishment for the crime was to be "hanged, drawn, and quartered" in that the convict would be:
Dragged on a hurdle (a wooden frame) to the place of execution. (drawn)
Hanged by the neck, but removed before death (hanged).
Disembowelled, and the genitalia and entrails burned before the victim's eyes (often mistaken for drawing).
Beheaded and the body divided into four parts (quartered).
Typically, the resulting five parts (i.e. the four quarters of the body and the head) were gibbeted (put on public display) in different parts of the city, town, or, in famous cases, country, to deter would-be traitors. Gibbeting was abolished in England in 1843.

I would have to say the Electric Chair would be #1. You know that a taser is painful - imagine what jumping up the amps to a lethal dosage and shooting that through your brain would be like.
#2 would have to be the Gas Chamber. Once those chemicals hit the water you know your next few breaths will be your last. It's like participating in your own execution. How long can you hold your breath?
Hanging would be #3. It's quick if it's done right, but if it's botched you slowly strangle to death.
Firing squad would be #4.

on February, 9,2004 William Corviss 17, was arrested in Dallas TX for posession of less than 10 grms of marijuana. He had no previous record but was nonetheless sentenced to 10 years in the Texas Dept of Corrections. Upon arrival in Gatesville prison the youth was set upon and over the course of 5 hours raped & beaten over 25 times, The final incident was with the aide of a broken mop handle which perforated his bowel in 4 places he was then dragged and left in a maintenance closet where he was found 2 days later still clinging to life. Although medical attention was performed the trauma was too intense, blood loss too great, and septicemia too far advanced for his broken body to fight. Murdered for posession of 1 marijuana cigarette ,...brutal indeed!!

It's antiquated but I always though "The Brazen Bull" was a horrible way to go. It was more of a torture device than a device of execution, but it served to kill. Essentially, the offender was placed into a large metal bull and slowly roasted to death.
This method was truly used back in the Greek / Roman era. Here is a link to a deeper story.

The firing squad is still used in Utah, but it is not default. I believe you have to request it.
But I agree, the electric chair certainly isn't anything to be happy about.

Life in prison would be the most brutal of all. Seems to me anyway. It takes a lot longer than any other way.

Death of a thousand cuts, also called death by "slow slicing" in China sounds like the worst.
Although being drawn and quartered in England sounds pretty awful too.
Firing squad would be cake IMO, plus they give you a smoke.

Unfortunately no one who has been executed can tell us which hurts more, or is the least painless. But remember most of these people raped, tortured, or taunted their victims. No matter what pain the go through during the execution could compare with what their victim went through!

Hanging seems to me to be the worst. There are even worse things in some countries, but in this country I think the needle would be the best.

In Afghanistan if your sentence is death - you will be put in prison and your sentence will be carried out by your being stoned to death.
Personally, I can think of no greater claim to brutality than to be stoned until dead.
