Using bigger words doesn't necessarily make you more intelligent, but the MISUSE of them can make you look and feel like an idiot.
Sometimes, big words are necessary in every day life. For example, I work in the medical field, and it is VERY important that I can read, write, speak and understand some words that look like the entire alphabet was used! If I mispronounce a medical term to, say, a consulting physician, or to an insurance company, there can be very dire consequences.
My advice is this - NEVER use ANY word if you are not 100% sure of its meaning in the context in which you are using it.

My vocabulary is fairly good, but I think all people that read have a good vocabulary, or they should if they use a dictionary when they read. If you are serious, you should write down the word and its definition, and then try to use it in your daily conversation....I do not know if using more complex words means that you are intelligent, but developing a concise and profound vocabulary can definitely develop the intelligence you were blessed with....... Okay???

Spiro Agnew used to constantly use "big" words that were ridiculous in his intended context, because he wanted to sound intelligent. It simply emphasized what a dolt he truly was.
What is more important is learning to use language appropriately. I do a lot of technical writing and communicating in scientific or academic venues, but speak colloquially in social communications.
A good vocabulary is a tool that helps you to communicate effectively. The better the vocabulary, the more valuable and powerful a tool it is.

In general, using a variety of words is a sign that you know more words, and people generally know more words from reading a lot. And if you read a lot, people assume that you are intelligent. But, believe me, it's much better to use words that you really know how to use than to try to use big words that you don't really know how to use. If you use a big word without really knowing its meaning, people who know will see that you are trying to look smarter than you are, and they'll respect you even less.

I posses a larger than normal vocaublary. I don't think it's a matter of bigger words but more distinct words to identify what is being discussed. Plus it keeps one from living on a few words. It annoys me when somebody will repetitively use the same word.

Do I speck?? No, I speak :) vocabulary does not show someone to be more intelligent. But it does show someone wanting to learn and expand themselves. Although it seems people with little expressive vocabulary looks sort of like someone who is not very educated. If you want to expand your vocabulary then reading is always good!

I think that depending on your socio-economic environment and where the people that are judging you are from, your vocabulary is consistent with how people perceive your intelligence... yes... people do think that "bigger words" are from more intelligent people. I just think its because you tend to have read more, conversed more and have a larger word database in your head, but that's just my humble opinion....but wadda I no...

Speaking intelligently tends to place one in an elitist group where only the select few are allowed to understand the words flowing from their bombastic mouths.

If one wishes to convey a sense of one's own aptitude and how widely read one is, one can speak with vernacular that befuddles those without a modicum of knowledge beyond the mundane. For it is not only one's education that is imbued in the selection of one's word; nay, it is one's edification.

it does not mean that you are more intelligent it just means that you have time to study big words. a person with an iq of 70 can learn big words by studying them.
