You'll probably be fine but Hunts Point is not exactly safe. In some ways it's gotten better over the past few years like all areas of NYC have but crime was actually rising for awhile and may still be. Lots of robberies, burglaries, vandalism, slashings and car theft still. Barretto St. is a couple of blocks from the projects. It's still one of the 'bad' neighborhoods of NYC that no one wants to go to but I'm pretty sure you'll make it out alive. I guess there are a few worse places you could go.

Barretto Street....definitely in Hunts Point.
You are not near the hookers at that part but you do have your junkies looking to score. In the daytime it is not THAT bad, but at night, just be aware and watch your back.

This zipcode is hunts point, about as dangerous as East NY or Flatbush in brooklyn. Just watch your back, and do not carry ipods or other valuables here.
