My son has a paper due monday and he has to pick a artifact from a time period. He chose Hitties. I'm trying to help him out but I've been out of school for 25 years and really having trouble here..
Ok the artifact that he has chosen is: "A Hatti Bronze Ceremonial Standard dated from around 2300BC. Its a Hittie Deer Figure.
What he has to find out is what type it is (established)
The date of the artifact (established)
Who created it (established)
Why was the artifact created? (not established)
What does the existence of this document say about whoever created it (not established)
A picture of the artifact can be found at : TurkeyTravelPlanner.com
Its 3 deer standing in a circular object.
I know this probably sounds crazy to even post and ask this but like I said I've been out of school for 25 years and Im really rusty when it comes to stuff like this..
This is a 6th graders homework
Thanks in advance

If it is ceremonial then I'm assuming some religious significance. Therefore - and I assume you mean Hittite - if you research Gods/goddesses for the Hittites and search for the significance of the deer then i think that will help - I'm not an expert on Hittite's but given the time frame and the place Turkey, which is sometimes referred to as Asia Minor historically, was heavily influenced by the Greek culture (sorry to experts if I'm wrong here) So Goddess represented by the deer is the goddess of hunting - i know the Romans called this goddess Diana but you need to find the Greek name of her (You should be able to google it)
Regarding the question about the document , I'm a little confused here- does the teacher want an explanation of the usefulness of the website where you found the picture or do they want you to draw a conclusion about what the statue itself represents to the Hittite culture? If they want to know about it's representation to the culture I'm having an educated guess - The culture of the Hittite's probably used representation in sculpture and art to appease/appeal to the gods for support. So that is what i think the figure may represent.
May i also suggest (as i am a modern history teacher by trade) that you go to your local library and borrow a reference book on the Hittite/ ancient Mediterranean civilizations(You might need help from the librarian) The reason i suggest this is the educational methodology of getting your son to do this work is to force him to develop the process for research. Books are still valuable as they have to be edited and confirmed to be accurate by a reputable publisher. That way if his teacher asks him how he came to the conclusions about his chosen figure then he actually has some knowledge justifying his ideas - and that is what will help his learning development. That will assist him to be better equipped for the next task. Good Luck .

Sounds like he has all the information he needs to get started writing HIS paper and you can keep an eye on him to assure that is what he is doing. He can go to the library and they will assist in guiding him to the section he needs and even some of the books, then he will have to do the reading.
Also you are on the right machine for information, just not here. He should start with www.ask.com. This will lead him to different sites that may be able to provide him with additional information.

He is in advance because he is capable of doing this project with a LITTLE guidance.

Very few people browsing through this site would be able to grace you with such a vast array of information without research.

If you've come this far, you should realize what great potential the internet has as a study resource. Even being quite out of practice, you can show you son how to study and write a good paper using the tools at his disposal.

As opposed to relying on others, teach you son independence and guide him towards a future of knowledge.

Has he keyed in the URL bar at the top of the screen, the artifact that he has chosen? So much info. can be obtained there. Many people don't even try to see if they can get what they need there. I'd trust info. from the internet quicker than I would from this site.
there's nothing wrong with this site. It just isn't as accurate if you can get it online good luck where ever you get it..

Well thoughs unestablished things are level 2 questions which means you can infer it. If you can't find anything on why the artifact was created or What does the existence of this document say about whoever created it then research Who created it and study him/her/them.

Trust me I'm Asian!
