Well I know there's a Wireless cell phone modem for Laptop units you can insert in your Cardslot....it' runs at about 110 Kb, which is certainly better than 36 - 47 Kb for a standard modem.
Now you can get DSL only on a landline without having to pay for Voice....it'll give you a minimum of 768 Kb up to 3MB if you pay for the higher level of service....You may have to insist that you only want DSL and absolutely no phone service

You can use any free wifi if you have some in your area. Most places do not have it around homes. They have sites that show where free wifi is in your town and you can look it up fast. I would cancel phone and try dsl and voip. It might save you money. Every area is different. You might have to get dsl over phone line but not have regular phone service and use voip instead. If you use cellular then just get dsl because using neighbors wifi without thier permission is not legal in most places.

There are wireless compaines that will supply you service such as verizon wireless or others that are unique to your location. These compaines are often capable of providing DSL performance without the need for a phone line. Second option is to obtain an omnidirectional antenna and hook it up to a linksys wireless-G PCI card through a pigtail and you will be able to leech off of your neighbors for miles away, depending on geographics. Legit or not legit your call, but both work.

A few phone companies will do DSL without land-line telephone, and that may be your best bet: the only other alternative is satellite, which is expensive ($50 a month), and at the moment not available because the satellite company is debugging a new bird.

AT&T offers a NO phone line DSL service.
When you call you have to ask them to transfer you to the DSL with no dial tone line because you go to the main channel and get routed from there.
Don't call on a Monday or after 7pm...longer holds.

Some cell phones can be used as a modem.I have an iDEN motorola i850 with nextel that works.
"iDEN USB Installation Application/USB Modem Driver
This software applet will install all necessary iDEN USB files and drivers for use with your iDEN USB cable. This will also automatically create a USB Modem for compatible Windows based computers."
