I have a small black speck on the top of one of my molders, I have been to the dentist twice and they have not said anything about it. So, could they have missed it?

Sounds like you need to whip out your toothbrush and get rid of that grain of pepper once and for all.

There are deep developmental grooves on the molar's biting surface that are really hard to keep clean (toothbrush bristles are too big to get into them) so they get stained easily. When your dentist does an exam, s/he goes over everything and has probably seen it. You have probably felt them picking at it with their explorer (a thin hook-shaped instrument). They can tell if there is a cavity there by how hard the tooth is when they poke at it. They also take xrays which would show any decay. I don't think it's anything to be concerned about or the dentist would have said something about filling it or applying a sealant. =)

See if you can brush or pick at that black speck, maybe mouth wash it out. If it does not go away then it is a cavity. Its kind of bad if your dentist didnt notice it twice. Bring it to their attention when you see them next time. I had a black speck in the very back top mohler and my dentist and ortho found it. So its pretty bad if your dentist didnt notice it twice, and two people i went to instantly found it.

Next time you go, ask them what it is. I doubt they missed it, but if it worries you, ask!
