It depends on your personal sensitivity to caffeine. Chocolate has caffeine, so that very well could be the problem. Hot chocolate is also high in sugar if you do not buy a sugar-free product, which can give you extra energy. Consider not having any hot chocolate after lunchtime, or switching to something else that is sweet but caffeine-free, such as the variety of flavored green teas on the market. Check the package--even tea can have the caffeine if it is not marked caffeine free. Also, consider if there are other reasons why you cannot sleep. Are you drinking it to take a moment to calm down? Is it a break from work or something stressful? If so, you may be restless because of your work stress or some other source of stress, which is a different topic to address.

The reason why it wakes you up is probably because it is warm and if you are using quality types of hot chocolate then there is a possibility of caffeine from the chocolate. It isn't that much but it could be if you are not used to it.

Depends on how sensitive you are to caffeine.
I stop drinking all sources of caffeine by 1:00 pm or else I am a wild fidgety person all night long.
Or unless I am working the night shift then I drink mountaindew all night to keep me up.

Chocolate does have traces of natural caffeine in it. But just like caffeine it has sugar also... which may be giving you that "pick me up" feeling. If you are sensitive to either I'd say limit it to one cup... and they do make a sugar free kind if you are wanting some right before bed.

well, it has a little bit of caffeine, but not much. Try eating a chocolate bar with it... or drinking hot chocolate and also drinking a coffee, tea or energy drink

Warm milk usually helps people fall asleep. However, the sugar in the cocoa might give you an energy buzz.
