I have a cockatiel but was just given another one by a lady because her husband couldn't stand to hear her all day long. My cockatiels cage is 18x18x24. The new cockatiel came with a cage also. it is 24x16x30. but I would like to get a quaker. What size cage do 2 cockatiels need? What size cage does a quaker need?

It is not advisable to have a quaker in with cockatiels. Typically quakers are more aggressive and larger birds and may pick on the cockatiels. It would be best to have two separate cages for the separate species.

First, the cockatiels may not get along. Wait to purchase a cage for them to live together. After quarentine (at least 30 days) place their cages near each other so they can get to know each other. When and if they start to get along, then have their cages next to each other and let them have SUPERVISED play time. Then and only then you can start looking for a cage for the two of them to live together.

For the quaker, get the largest cage that you can afford, "The minimum size for a pet Quaker cage is about 18 x 24 x 18 but this is minimum. When in doubt, larger is always better. The only limitations to size is what your pocketbook and home situation permits. Cage bar spacing should be no wider than one inch."

Always supervise the birds when they are together. Larger birds such as quakers can really harm a cockatiel with one bite.

Also, make sure that quakers are legal in your state. There are several states where they are NOT allowed, and several others that have regulations on owning the birds.

A good rule of thumb is, the bird should be able to spread it's wings without them touching the cage on any side. You can never give them too much room. I would pair up the 'teils and have the quaker by his self. I think the 24x16x30 would be ok for the quaker, I would buy a cage a little bit bigger for the teils.

There is a good site on Ebay that sells large cages for much less. I bought one extra large flight cage that sits on a table top- nothing fancy, but lots of room for my 'tiel and it cost me a quarter of the price I payed a few months earlier for my lovebirds- same cage- different price. Do research, don't buy in a pet store you will get ripped off.

Unless you are sure they will all get along together in one cage, you should separate them first. You need to separate any new bird you bring in your home for a minimum of two weeks to one month, due to potential diseases one bird could pass to the other. Birds are very fragile as far as their health is concerned, especially their respiratory system.
Concentrate on one bird at a time. It sounds like you are going a bit bird crazy by wanting to acquire so many at one time. Some breeds of birds require a lot of attention, and get very jealous when the attention and affection is shared by others, even humans. Think carefully before you have so many birds to look after at one time.

I love my quaker, she is such a doll. My quaker has a loud fit 1 time a day for about 5-7 mins a day as the sun goes down. Other then that she is so sweet, she greets me with kisses whenever she sees me, she eats dinner with me. But, she isn't so needy that she can't spend time alone and play in her cage. I think quakers are wonderful, and if you can get one you certainly should!
