I work in the city and live just North of it, so I eat "Philly food" all the time. But I'm curious about those who have visited and tried the food. What did you think? Here's what I'm talking about:

Soft Pretzels
Cheese Steaks
Hoagies
Scrapple

I'm from Philly.

It embarrasses me to hear people say that Pat's or Geno's has the best cheesesteaks. The best ones are found at the little Mom and Pop pizza places in every neighborhood.

Soft pretzels...the stand at Temple University! I don't know what they do, but their's are the absolute best in the city! The stand is right outside of Paley library.

Hoagies, again any Mom and Pop. I don't know how Subway survives in Philly.

SCRAPPLE! Now there's a blast from the past! My Mom never made it since she and Dad hated it, but every time we went to brunch somewhere, my brother and I got scrapple!

You are forgetting TastyKakes! They aren't sold outside of the tri-state area. When I was at home for Christmas, Dad bought me some Butterscotch Krimpets to bring back to LA with me. I think I ate them all on the plane!

I was born there, and my parents grew up there. Now we live in California. One places ships the rolls from Philly, but ithe cheesesteaks are not the same. I love the "philly food" except scrapple. I made it for my dad once as a surprise, and was disgusted by what was in it. It tasted okay with LOTS of syrup.
I would kill for a tastykake lemon pie. There is nothing like it! There are a few places where you can get krimpets and cupcakes here but never the pies! The other thing I remember that you cannot get anywhere else is Charles Chips, and their chocolate covered chips. When I tell people they think I am gross. but they were so delicious.

I did visit Philly back in 2001 and had a blast. I went to Pat's for a cheesesteak and loved it. I also had a pretzel from some other famous place and it was by far the best I have ever tried. Try San Antonio for the Mexican Food, I hear it is awesome.

I'm a Philly guy living in virginia now and I miss the food! Cheese steaks from Jim's or any small neighborhood place, scrapple - no one here cooks it right. Wish I could get up more often just to eat.

The pretzels outside Paley Library at Temple! YESSSSS!!!!!
I like Delassandros and Geno's for cheesesteaks- you can't judge a cheesesteak at the mall- not fair to the city!
Tastycake and hoagies-(sigh)- noone but someone a Philadelphian knows what a hoagie is.
I used to love the seafood salad hoagies at the Wawa- with ranch Doritos and Snapple Peach Iced Tea. My favorite meal

I have to agree with Sexy Trojan. There are a lot of neighborhood pizza and hoagie place around that would smoke Pat's or Geno's.
But probably the best Philly combo is, water ice and a soft pretzel.

I've tried some of the cheesesteaks, they were good, but there was a fly in one of them.
