It's true that norm is 2-3 months' salary. However, it's not mandatory. Spend what you can afford.
I suggest you look at wholesalers/manufacturers and do your research before you go. Jewelers see a guy who's uneducated about diamonds a mile away and they take advantage of your ignorance.

A couple months salary is what I've heard. However, I would hope that the man would only spend what he can afford to spend, and that the woman won't be all put out about it. I know lots of couples who didn't have engagement rings at all, and just used gold bands. A friend recently went to Europe and said that the women over have there have on Gucci, Louis Vuitton, fur coats, etc. but don't wear diamonds, they just have plain bands. She was very surprised. A diamond engagement ring can always be purchased later, when one is more financially able.

Around 600. Hopefully they, or you, don't believe the marketing nonsense about spending two or three months' salary on a ring; that is simply hype from the jewellers and diamond merchants.
The cost of the ring is immaterial; the symbolism is important.

It seems to differ from place to place, in the UK they say 1 month's salary, but that is just like a status symbol, the bigger the diamond means you earn lots of money etc...people are supposed to be impressed by that etc...personally I think that is nonsense, I do not think people should expect anything larger than their fiance can reasonably afford. Mine was less than £100 but it is the most perfect ring that he could have chosen for me. I am not out to show off what we have or have not got, it's the sentiment behind it that counts.

It all depends on your financial status at the time! My husband spent $5000.00 on mine! But he was at a point where he could afford that! We were also buying property and building a house at the time! So I knew I would rather more to go into the real estate and living situation than I would a ring! I know I can always upgrade my ring to a larger diamond if I find the need!

We shopped around for 2 months to get the best deal, we spent $8,900 on a 1.5 ct. solitaire with high standards. That was 2 months his salary, and right at our budget...then we got a wedding band that was pretty cheap ($600) because I wanted a simple band with a tiny diamond line, didn't want to take away from my main stone. The jeweler also guarantees the stone for life, but I have to take it in at least once a year and have it cleaned/pronges checked...that's all free.

It depends on how much money the lover wants to spend on his object of affection. Since I made a lot of monet on stocks, I used about $1,400. But the norm is usually 500-750. But then again, I was lucky with stocks, so about 500 is good. If you can't, two months salary is also good.

I believe it's supposed to the equivalent of 2 or 3 months salary, but if you really love someone it shouldn't matter how much they spent. I have friend with much larger rings than mine, but I love mine no matter what.

Hopefully not a cent more than can be afforded. As a woman, I find diamond engagement rings stupid. Give me real estate....

the avearge amount is anything above 1,000. If its less, doesnt mean anything, perhaps he got a good deal, there are always big sales on rings. But he should be looking at spending around 1,000 dollars.
