I live in Mexico, so, I know and taste the real taquitos and the real flautas, hehe, finally, this is the place where they've born. Then, the taquito is a little taco (reduced in it's size), made with a little corn tortilla (about 4 inch diameter) and it's flat, with a meat (it coud be also potato, bean, chili stripes, etc.) filling, and picked onion, coriander, sauce and other 'add-ons'.

In Mexico the tacos are so different than the Taco Bell ones. The Tortilla isn't like a tostada, it's only a hot tortilla (fried or not) filled usually of meat and it's flat and soft. Taquitos are commonly fried.

Finally, the difference between Flauta and Taquito is that flauta is a rolled up into a tube, and it has to be fried.

A Taquito is just stuff (usually meat) inside a tortilla. You can make a taquito from just about anything. But flautas are usually fried into a flute-shape (thus the name), and I believe they fall in the taquito category. They have cream, lettuce and cheese on top.

is some places, nothing. They are both little corn tortilla tubes filled w/ some kind of (usually) meaty filling, rolled up into a tube, and deep fried.

In some places a flauta is a flat, open-face taco, like the "tostada" at Taco Bell.

In some places, a taquito is a breakfast burrito, usually a flour tortilla filled w/ egg, cheese, potato, ham, sausage, bacon, or any combo t hereof.

The difference is a regional thing.

A flauta is a flour tortilla while a taquito is corn.

The above answers are totally wrong btw.

A "Flauta" is made with a deep-fried flour tortilla, where as a "Taquito" is made from corn tortillas- deep fried.
