The only reason to use a green bottle is tra-di-tion . Green bottles were first used because when wine was first being put into glass bottles you could not make clear glass. Even wineglasses were colored not clear to start with. NO - the purpose is not to protect the wine from the UV rays – how many UV rays are in a case of wine and why are you storing your wine in the sunshine?

Excessive cold is not good for wines, high humidity can damage the labels and causes mouldy corks, and excessive light is also a big problem with wine storage. Wine is bottled in green or brown coloured bottles to reduce light contact with the wine, and given time light can leech the colour from red wines and can give the whites a murky tinge.

Not all are green. The color does help keep its flavor. I do believe also that the color of a bottle is based on the type of metal that is used in the manufaturing process. Metals are mixed in with the glass for specific purposes, mainly to preserve freshness and flavor.

To keep the light out. It does something to the wine.

Milk bottles were produced yellow a little while back for the same reason.

That's why a wine cellar is dark also.

The tone of green is probably more appealing to the eye. Weather it be for seducing someone, or an office party. If they made them all red (seduction) what if you were bringing it for a new years party? Green just is a very seasonal color that can go with most occasions.
