I am a lesbian and an atheist, and I would just like to know why religious folk seem to hate me/gays/atheists so much. There is no logical reason to hate, after all. Please do not spew unoriginal junk at me; I mean this as a serious and respectful question and hope to learn something.

I have a male avatar because none of the female avatars look like me and I am butch.
I do not think that all people of faith hate gays and/or atheists, and I don't think that only those people hate. I just notice more hate from religious folk.

Just because I am an atheist does not mean that I have no purpose in life or hope or anything. I am actually a rather happy person with good morals and intellect and looking forward to a bright future. The only thing that being an atheist means is that I do not believe that a god/dess(es) exists.

I got pulled in by the subject line, too, expecting some KKK dropout to be trolling again. Well done. The screen name is a pretty good play on words, too.
Fear and hatred of gays goes back thousands of years. In modern times, as religion loses more and more credibility, they are lashing out at those whom they think are responsible for their decline. Gays, being often marginalized anyway, are an easy target. They can't go after atheists, or people of other races anymore, so unfortunately, you're "IT." They have the convenience of an obscure and easily misinterpreted scripture as an excuse: "God says it's wrong!" I can only hope it gets better; I don't think it will any time in the near future. Good luck to you.

People should not hate you for being who you are. However, a lot of homosexuals, do promote their lifestyle, and are very proud of it, and even have parades etc. This is just not cool to do. They also want special rights given to them ,and when they do not get them, (same sex marriage for instance, and the rights that affords), they compare themselves to blacks long ago in this country etc. It is not a race issue. It is these kind of issues, and the wanting the acceptance of society that makes it hard for some homosexuals to make friends with those on the other side. You would admit it goes both ways, I hope....you do see this, the hate going both ways I mean? Atheists, do similar things, like wanting to take down the big white cross in california, because it is offensive or something. This brings on the wrath of others, and it should. They are suing the pants off of people, for being offended by everything, etc . I know you know of what I speak, but I am just answering your question also. You are lumped with this group unfortunately, and maybe though, you , if you feel differently, would encourage some homosexuals and atheists to be a bit more agreeable in society, and not try to change so much. The wanting to be accepted, and even let kids think it is ok, is just over the top. It is not a good path, and it reaps negativity for the reasons I mentioned, plus some more. Atheists promote evolution way too much, and don't even give fair play to other theories. That simply makes no sense, and gives a feeling of fear of just telling children in schools about opposing theories, like creation. Hate though? That is a bit strong, even from me a heterosexual christian. I don't hate any group of people.

because what is considered to be the norm is heterosexual and religious...it scares people not to have anything to look forward to after this life...and those that are spiritual don't know how someone can accept there being no God, no purpose almost in living...as for the lesbian thing....well...if that's what makes you happy nobody should judge you but unfortunately it strikes a cord with people....its just fearing the unknown, making them question the why when and where...some don't understand that its not a preference. i used to think it was a preference but so many people have tendencies at such a young age...i think its more biological. until they understand that, they will realize they can't change who you are...btw i'm christian and i don't hate you...so maybe your overgeneralizing as well...that is probably the answer to your question...stereotypes and fear of the unknown causes people not to be able to accept the person...christians that love first are really demonstrating the love of Christ...and that's the way it should be...

O.K so i could spit out a bunch of biblical quotes to you and it won't make a difference...But I do want to give you one "Galatians 5:22, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with it's passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. As a person of faith and a Christian...I don't hate...and I am sorry that people claiming to be Christians have treated you this way...Yes the bible says a few times that the lifestyle you live is wrong...but it is not for anyone of us to judge you or hate you...We are to love as Jesus loved...I do believe that you might have turned from the idea of God because of the hate shown towards you and you orientation...and I think that is sad and I apologize for that..I hope someday your heart opens up to the idea of God...that to me is the bigger issue...The bible also says "you shall love your neighbour as you love yourself" it does say except if the are gay or atheists....Again I am sorry...I hope you find God and I wish you the best in life....and remember not everything in life has to be logical...somethings just are...Be blessed......

Don't stereotype so much. Why do you assume all religious folk hate lesbians, gays, and atheists? Sure, some might, but I could shoot the same question right back at you and the percentage would probably be A LOT worse.
I love gays, lesbians, atheists, Muslims, Buddhists, etc. I just hate what they believe/do. There is a HUGE difference.
I hope you learned something. I appreciate your abstaining from words such as "Christians wack-jobs" or "fairy-tales" or "religious crap." Thanks for the dignity, it's become rare these days.

I don't think religious folk hate you or anyone for that matter. I think religious folk hope to point you in the right direction. God is love but that doesn't mean right and wrong has been done away with. I doubt that a Church will close the door in your face when you try to enter it. There is a right and a wrong way to do things. Look into it.

Ok Here I go and alot of people will hate me for this! I can feel the fury already! No particular religion, cause many can fit here by beliefs.
Please do understand I am, as I said before, an open minded Catholic born and rasied.
It irks me to no end the crap that is spewed against homosexuals in the name of religion! It really does. Here is my understanding of the issue:
1 God made man and woman in his image! and we are taught that God doesn't make junk! He does not make mistakes! He does not give a damaged soul to the unborn! (all important for later)
2 In doing so we have intellect to learn and conquer our world. Inovations and inventions to help the people as a whole.
3 Science has proven that homosexuality is not only a human trait. Monkeys do it etc and so on. When a population gets to large more homosexual animals will show up. Population control. (remember this it comes up later)
4 With further study they have proven that the majority of human homosexuals have a differential in the sexual gland in the head. In other words it is the wrong size for the given gender.
5 Proven existance of the homosexual populace.
Now I want to look at society before I ask a question:
1 Society from way back discriminates against Homosexuals.
2 Homosexuals are beat or killed for being what they are. (within how many decades has North America stopped putting Homosexuals in jail for being who they are? by the way, Not the Question)
3 Homosexuals hide in society. Pretend to be straight!
4 Population, those studies previously mentioned, goes out of control.
5 Finally in a day in age the Homosexual populace is given the freedom to come out of hiding after many before them died in recent decades.
6 so there are diponsant ex-spouces, children not knowing who they are because their lives as they know it are lies, and broken homes. All putting stress on society resources.
So the question I have is who's fault? Well that would be societies of present and past. If Homosexuals lived they way they were made in the first place none of this would be a problem.
So seeing as God made them, we've proven they exist, then why do religions condem themselves to hell for thinking they are above God(obviously) by calling his creations EVIL!
Heterosexuals carry the burden, love and fullfilment of children.
Homosexuals were to carry the burden of not knowing or understanding such things! For them to team up and live life to the fullest! I think God would have wanted it that way!
So we shouldn't hate you at all!
For athiest your different and well pretty much sums it up. But not in my books!

Basically, it's fear of invalidation. Accepting something that you have been taught is wrong and believed that, perhaps for decades, is very hard to do. It threatens to invalidate the code by which you have lived.
By the way, "Hate the sin, love the sinner" is a cop-out. Just a way to avoid being responsible for being self-righteous and judgmental.

Religious people hate gays because homosexuality is prohibited by the bible and you add on top of that being atheist that makes them hate even more. But i ask myself sometimes why do people hate when god told them to love their neighbor as they love themselves? it's ironic. just be you and ignore the rest. besides isn't god so forgiving? he'll forgive you if they say it's a sin.
