A self righteous person believes they are right despite any evidence to the contrary. They have set themselves up as righteous. At Luke 18:11-14 Jesus tells of a self righteous Pharisee who even proclaimed his righteousness to God The Pharisee stood and began to pray these things to himself, ‘O God, I thank you I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. Â I fast twice a week, I give the tenth of all things I acquire.’ Â But the tax collector standing at a distance was not willing even to raise his eyes heavenward, but kept beating his breast, saying, ‘O God, be gracious to me a sinner.’ Â I tell YOU, This man went down to his home proved more righteous than that man; because everyone that exalts himself will be humiliated, but he that humbles himself will be exalted.” We must bend ourselves to God's will, not declare ourselves righteous for our worship to be acceptable to God.

It's someone who "goes about to establish their own righteousness" instead of God's. That's in the Bible somewhere. Some christians put too much emphasis on their own righteousness and being "an example to believers" when the Bible clearly says "confess your faults one to another".
I was at on church where the people decided to do just that-confess to each other. One said he ate too much, one said she like ice cream too much. I heard a woman preacher say she got up in the morning and thought of coffee before she thought of God. This is self-righteousness. If that's all they ever did wrong, I say make a statue of them.
Self-righteousness is when you think of your own "righteousness" before the righteousness of God who alone is righteousness.

It's attempting to prove that we have righteousness of our own, separate from the work that God is doing in our lives, as if we are trying to tell the world that God chose us because we are choice people, rather than because of his mercy and compassion for those unworthy of his love.

It is the belief that they are the standard of truth and rightness.
Of course, only Jesus is truly righteous. Not any of us.

Here's the Bible's definition:
"For not knowing about God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own (righteousness), they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law as a means of righteousness to everyone who believes." (Romans 10:3,4)
