I'll concur with most of the people here and say Gray Goose. I used to think that vodka was vodka... and then I tried Gray Goose. Really smooth and delicious. I made martinis with blue cheese-filled olives in them. Fantastic!

my favorite is Tito's. It's made in Texas and a little hard to find.

Our friends own a liquor store so one night we lined up about 10 brands inlcuding Grey Goose & Stoli's. Tito's got the most votes, and it actually costs less; Grey Goose was second. Comparing the two, Tito's tastes very slightly citrus-y whereas Grey Goose has more earthy botantical overtones.

I have a friend who was considering marrying a girl from one of the old Soviet sattelite states. When he would go over there he would bring me back different bottles of which I cannot remember the names of. These were almost always as smooth as H2O. They were much better than anything I have gotten that is available here in the states. Prices were also extremely cheap. Sometimes less than $5.00. I hope you get some answers from someone in Europe because they might be able to advise you on the names.
