My son is four and has been going to the potty fine for about 2 yrs now. We recently took a trip that was about 1500 miles away by car (don't know if that has anything to do with it) but When we returned all of a sudden he started having problems going to the bathroom. He'll act as though he has to go and instead of going, he'll hold it and then he'll complain later that his but hurts from it. and has been going like every ten min. or so. so I quess my question would be, what is causing this, if he were doing it for attention I could understand but he isn't going to poop that much for attention. Is it part of an infection or something, something I should be concerned about? should I take him to the doctor? He has been doin this for about a week. does n-e one know what this could be?

I would definatly call the doctor.... it sounds like a bladder infection.... sitting in the car, waiting for a rest stop to potty and getting his bladder and urethra irritated. If you've ever had one, you know how uncomfrotable they can be.... and make you feel like you have to go even if you just went. I wouldnt panic....but get it checked out for piece of mind and faster recovery.

This happened to my daughter when she was four, had been potty trained for years then all of a sudden all the symptoms that you described appeared. I saw no rash to reason for the burning so I called her Dr and took a urine sample with me. She had a urinary track infection. Actually we waited before we sought medical attention thinking it was other things (it was the burning that tipped me off), it became very bad and she spent a week in the hospital to make sure it didn't effect her kidneys. Call his Dr. I think that may be what he has. Kids are very susceptible to them. The sooner you catch it the easier it will be to get rid of. Good Luck

Our son got severe constipation from a long car trip. This caused him to start holding his poop, because the memory of the pain made him afraid. (He didn't put this into words.)

We only found out what happened when liquid poop started running out his body. I went on line and learned from the Medical College of Virginia website that constipation in a young child commonly causes this problem. You may be catching your son at the beginning of the problem.

When it worsens, when the poop starts running down their legs, this happens because they've held in so much poop that their colon nerves no longer detect the presence of poop or the need to eliminate. They literally don't know they need to go, until they feel it outside of them.

The cure for this, and presumably for where your son is, is lots of water, lots of fiber (water water water a must with lots of fiber) and a few days of a very gentle children's laxative. Start putting your son on the toilet at the same time every day, for about 20 minutes. Explain to him that you want him to poop if you can, but to just relax, and not worry if he poops or not.

Sitting on the potty every day at the same time, relaxing, drinking lots of water, and taking the very mild children's laxative should cure the problem.

Both my kids backslid briefly. Sometimes it's a response to some sort of stress or change. Often kids will intentionally revert as a boundary test or as part of their own growing up (acceptance/resistance). Sometimes they forget their body cues and have accidents. My kids really liked to go potty outside and would contrive ways to "need to go NOW". It's an inconvenience for parents, embarrasing for the child, but you can reinforce the "grown up" toileting positively, not make drama about the reverting and it should clear up shortly. If there are other symptoms, constip/pain see Pediatrician.

Our son had problems when we traveled when he was little until we started carrying water from home with us. The doctor told us that drinking different water was causing it. He was fine, except when we forgot to take some water from home, until he was a little older. I forget at what age we didn't have to worry about it any more. I don't know if that is the same think our child is experiencing, though. Try to get him to drink several glasses of water or even Gingerale each day and maybe it will flush his system. If he doesn't get better, take him to see the doctor.

Whe you went on your trip did you stop every 1 1/2 to 2 hours to let him get some exercise? 1,500 miles is a very long trip especially for a child.

Children are very susceptible to complications from being still for too long. Have your pediatrician to check him out.

Take your son to the doctor. Don't guess, don't worry, don't ask people on this site, just take him to the Hospital. No matter what anyone says, they can not diagnose your child. Its a persisting problem and the only way to relieve yourself of any worry is to just have him seen.

Sounds like a bladder infection. Time to break out the green tea and cranberry juice, eh.

My 5 year old developed an impacted bowel due to not pooping for a few days.

A child should be having a bowel movement every day!!

If my son doesn't poop for a day, we have to give him 1 tbsp of milk of magnesia.

could be his nerves, mine do that and i don't leave far from home because mine are the total opp, I have to go all the time because of my nerves. Have him checked out, there might but I doubt be an underlying problem. Good luck and God bless you!
