Referring to the Antichrist, aka the Beast, a future world leader who will be completely under the control of Satan, the Bible says: "Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the Beast, for the number is the name of a man; and his number is six hundred sixty and six." (Revelation 13:18, and preceding verses)

I am not aware that anyone says the devil's number is 666
However the book of Revelation says that the number 666 will describe the anti-christ. In the bible, the number six is always used to represent mankind. My personal view on "666" is that it will be a man, a political system and a religious system.
No one knows for sure. But one thing is sure, God said it would happen.

In the bible, the number 3 is for emphasis.
The number 7 is a perfect, thus representing Jehovah and is just ways.
The number 10 is earthly completeness.
Therefore anything less than 7, like the number 6, represents sin and error.
Mankind’s condition or sinful state.
Since this number is 666, is given to the “beast” it represents world governments that are in opposition to Jehovah and his Son Christ Jesus.
666 is an emphasizing of mankind’s sinful state because most of mankind worships the government they are born into.

it's a misconception. because in Revalation 13:18, it says the number of the beast, who is of Satan, is 666. 666 is the number that each man, woman and child belonging to the beast shall bear or they shall neither buy nor sell. This mark will determine who shall die and go to heaven, or die and go to hell. This all happens after God's people (all who are earnestly saved and innocent children who never reached the age of accountability) are taken from the earth.
but 666 is not anumber to be feared now, as well, it just comes after 665 and before 667. But bearing it now is usually a sign of atheistic pride, in some cases satanism, and for the amusement of those who rejoice in the fear of others.

I have a book that says that the number came from his name. you know how the roman numerals are represented as letters (I,X,M,C) and so on i think that's how they got the number 666 but I'm not entirely sure.

I believe the affilliation comes from Aliester Crowley's association with that number Crowley is referred to as the beast 666 and many of crowleys beliefs were associate with satanism by fanatical christian who at the time controlled britains media its all lies Crowley wasn't a devil worshipper and 666 is not an evil number the whole relation was to discredit THELEMA and magick

Well it's not actually his number. 6 is just considered to mean "not perfect" since 6 would be incomplete because God created the world in 7 days.
