I'm interested in using Linux but haven't ever used it, any experienced Linux users direct me to which version to use ( red hat?). Also where to get it and a link on how to install and get it running would be sweet

There are several distributions for GNU/Linux. Go to one of the distribution sites and download the most recent version. I recommend Mandriva for a couple reasons. It has, by far, the easiest install process I have seen. Its entirely graphical and is easier than windows to install. A trained monkey could install it. Also, if you get the 4 cd, or 1 DVD versions, it is loaded with a metric ton of software.

There is the powerpack version they put together that you can buy or download (if you are a mandriva club member) but all the software in there is available to download on their RPM repository. The powerpack is jsut nicely bundled and they charge for that version. But for a regular user, you don't need anything more than what they give on the "free" version.

I have an older version of Suse that installed easily, and recently saw a recommendation for the latest Suse and Ubuntu versions as best in class.

Ubuntu is getting a lot of good reviews, so it would be a good choice to go with.

Try different distros... make your own call. Everybody has their own preferences. Ubuntu is popular, and easy to use. Redhat's open version, Fedora, is also a very popular distro, and open SUSE. If you are completely new to Linux, Linspire/Freeespire or XandrOS are designed as "Windows replacements". Personally, I always go back to the more customizable Slackware.

This is a good website to start at. It links to and reviews all the popular distros:

Download the desktop CD / DVD.....it is an ISO image. Burn the disk image to a CD or DVD and boot from the disk. The "Live" disk will let you try out Ubuntu before installing it....the install icon is on the desktop...you just click it to install Ubuntu Linux on your computer....

also...very helpful and active support forums for this distro.
