Lot's and lot's of research, not just from what you read in the papers but the literature available from social justice organizations. Try reading 'A People's History of the United States' by Howard Zinn. It's a real eye opener as to who is really the bad guy.

Check out the test scores and demographics of your local schools, and if you don't have a child, run through the drill of where to send your child to school if you did have one. Check to make sure there are metal detectors and full time armed security guards at the high school, ask why, if it is a public school in a liberal state, the public school students wear uniforms.
Well, at least that approach would work in Los Angeles.
Check out who pays the taxes that pay for the schools, and check out how the money the schools get is spent. Clue: ESL is expensive and the bottom academic level gets all of the money. Check how many once standard programs have been canceled or given short shrift so they are now only a name - like the gifted programs, music, language and PE.
Ask why in a state with a steady domestic population billions are being spent to build new schools, classes are often above 45 kids per class, and schools with ample room for past generations are having to run year round with emergency certificate teachers.

Do a few web searchs, watch some news, look up the words legal and illegal. I did these things a time back and I was kind of shock at how out of hand this has gotten.

1. illegal immigrants are ILLEGAL! That means they are NOT LEGAL. That means they have not gone through any legal process like other legal Americans. This is not fair to people who have come to this country legitimately and legally.
2. Illegal immigrants bring diseases into the US like TB
3. Illegals cost our country BILLIONS in added healthcare costs
4. Illegals clog our emergency rooms with minor and family care. I've had to wait for several hours myself in the emergency room for a REAL emergency.
5. Illegals significantly increase the crime rate
6. 50% of the prison population are Illegals
7. Because of the shear amount of illegals arriving so fast, this is causing cultural and language barriers. It is rapidly changing our culture and society and creating unnecessary pressures and racism.

The decision should not be difficult. "Illegal" is the key word. These people are not simply "taking jobs that :nobody else will do", they are straining the social services designed to benefit our citizenry, not paying taxes (or social security) on their "wages" as all Americans do to fund these social programs, comitting an disproportionate amount of violent crime, and driving down the wages of legitimate workers as employers like contractors who bid their jobs are forced to lower their bids to compete against companies that employ these illegal workers. In turn, theor legitimate workers endure reduced wages, less and lower future raises, and the possibility of layoff.
Persons who wish to enjoy the benefits of living and working in America need to follow the rules and immigrate legally.

Illegal immigrants use up resources that otherwise would go to persons legally in this country: food stamps, health care, child care, school spots, etc. Those cost more than just mere dollars, they cost opportunities for you and your family.
On the other hand, illegal immigrants are the people you find doing jobs others do not want, like the cleanup after Hurricanes Katrina & Rita, the forest fires in California, others.

Look at your pay stub and think about the part marked "deductions". A portion (albeit small) of these go for medical care/welfare/etc. to people who have not and probably will not ever pay any taxes. Nothing wrong with coming over and becoming a legal citizen, but illegals are a drain on our tax system.

Go to your browser and type in "Illegal immigration" and click on the search button. Here are some good links to get you started.
Note: you will not find any good reasons to allow illegal immigration to continue. http://www.jonesreport.com/articles/131006_food_stamp.html

How about this......the operative word in your question is "illegal". If it's o-kay for people to sneak here "illegally" and we forgive them, then it must also be o-kay for someone who steals your property to be forgiven.......right? After all, what's the difference....if the thief already has your property, then he may as well keep it!
Now, ask yourself......is it fair that the immigrants who come here legally must wait years to become citizens while the cheaters be given amnesty.....because, well, they're already here?
