I am an au pair for a boy who is super shy and serious. How can I make him less shy and relaxed around me?

Show an interest in what he likes. If he's draws a lot or reads a lot, then get him some supplies that go along with his hobby. Ask him for his "help" at something, for example if he drew a really cool picture or made a neat craft, ask him to show you how to do it too. If he knows a lot about astronomy, video games, movies, etc, tell him you don't know much about whatever it is and have him teach you. Take him out and about, to the museums, zoo, any place that will catch his interest and give him something to be excited about. Also, since he's shy, maybe his parents could enroll him in Karate or another martial art, the martial arts are great for building confidence and helping kids to not be so shy.

Don't push him, let him come to you. Find something you think might interest him (like a remote control dinoaur.. anything unique) and sit down and start playing with it. It won't take long until he gets interested enough to come ove and talk to you.
One really cool thing about kids, if there is something you're interested in (like coin collecting) and they see you do it, they want to know about it. Curiosity killed the cat and it gets shy kids to be more bold.
Good luck with him.

video games is a very good idea especially at that age BUT do educational video games. too many lil boys have games about guns and gangs and racing, just meaningless things
