Hello - does anyone know how I can insert a description of something which appears when you move the mouse pointer over part of a document - specifically a picture or diagram - not visible and doesn't print but appears on the screen when you put the mouse pointer on it (like a screen tip I suppose) - I am really stuck and would appreciate any help - I have tried MS Knowledge - but I don't even know the correct terminology for what it is I'm trying to do.

Thanks for your time.

Why would someone want to do this? Word docs are either printed or reviewed for context. Few people would be exploring them with a mouse, even people using them for learning.
Mouseover is a feature of HTML & Java, so you would want to export doc to HTML and set up your document there.
