Why is that?

Because we just do; it's part of being Southern. On a trip to California about a year ago, people looked shocked when I would tell them Thank You, for anything, handing me change, delivering my food, driving the shuttle bus.

Also, some of that may be perception because something about a Southern accent seems to make an insult seem almost sweet to a Northerner.

Graciousness is taught and there might be something said for growing up in the Bible Belt. Being sweet will get you so much further in life and truthfully takes a lot less energy than being rude and hateful all the time.

It is the upbringing of the children that has a lot of it to do with this aspect and in South, the families are very tight knit and they have a very good support system like Churches and community centers. Basically, they come from a history of farming and own ranches & normally people who care for plants and animals have a good heart I do not know the logic behind it but this is true. May be they are not as stressed or something as they are rich and have enough to live on or maybe they are totally happy and satisfied with what they have or may be just caring for the animals relieves them of all stress. They not only have a good heart, they also know how to show it out. I just love the way they are.
Very good question and observation....please do keep it coming

Because of violence. The more violent a culture has been or the more potential for violence in the present, the more crucial and important etiquette and manners become. China, Japan, Colombia all put great emphasis on etiquette and manners, they have all been or are extremely violent societies. They are honor based societies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honor

Because our mamas would slap us silly if we didn't! Seriously though, I was taught to treat people the way I would want to be treated. Also, that every face has a heart. I am very respectful to my elders and that includes strangers as well as my grandma. I think America would be a bit nicer if they would quit downing the South and instead, embrace our warm nature.

It's the way they were reared. Hospitality and manners are highly regarded in the South.

That hospitality and civility does NOT apply to minorities. I have seen it over and over and over. It is a sad brutal thing to watch people being treated no better than they were when MLK was here.
