Actually Avast will take up 30% of your resources when active in memory. AVG more or less is the same and so is Sophos AV. If you are a resource hungry user than it would better to upgrade and double your RAM. It will be a few more years of technological advances before the AV companies get the right formula to reduce their products hunger for resources.

Avast uses a bit more RAM than AVG, but it is well worth it, Avast has "WebShield" which scans all incoming HTTP traffic on port 80, while AVG waits until the traffic writes to the hard drive.

Avast is a far better anti-virus solution.

You can check yourself by simply hitting Ctrl + Alt + Delete which brings up your Task Mangaer.

On my system it generally registers 0% usage, I have it set to scon only when idle. It also scans my incoming mail, but its pretty good on resource use.
