My 3 year old son is really constipated. He needs to have more fiber in his diet. He drinks prune juice on a daily basis, but it does not seem to keep him regular. Is Benefiber strictly for adults or would it be ok to give it to him?

I have asked the doctor numerous times and she says to give him prune juice.

give him cereals, breads, crackers, that kind of stuff. that will help with his fiber. also give him fruits and veggies to help with his constipation. don't give him a lot of sugar type stuff as that can effect his system.

Yougert has active cultures that are found naturally in a healthy intestional system. Eating yougert will help regulate that balance and should also help. My child suffers from this as well. Also make homemade oatmeal cookies just lesson the sugar a bit. I always put in less thanthe recipe calls for and he still loves it. Molasses can be added and is also good for that .

That stuff may make him very sick. Don't do it unless a doctor says so. Try giving him things like frosted mini-wheats (he should like the sugar) because they are high in fiber. Also, try giving him fruits and veggies, even if you have to cover them in cheese or sauce to get him to eat them. If he is that constipated, it's better the fiber gets in there to help him moved than be concerned he's eating junk.

My daughter has had problems with this since she was about a year old. Our doctor prescribed Glycolax. We put it in her milk every morning...works like a charm and has no taste and is cheap. Probably less harsh than an adult fiber supplement. Ask your doc about it.

My Family Dr. actually recommended benefiber for my daughter. My daughter is 28 months old, and the dosage for her is 1/4 the dosage for an adult. That my be differant for your child though, depending on his weight. Check with your Doctor first.

my fiber sure (same thing really) says consult a doctor under age 6. if prunes aren't even helping than get the kid to a doctor, and meanwhile keep giving him fluids.

edit: if your daughter has chronic constipation and your doctor is just telling you to continue a course of treatment that is not working, then you need to consult a different doctor.
