i work in a mental health center, many things can show depression... or cause it. if you are feeling like you want to harm yourself, or another person, you are in crisis and need to get some help immediately. and... if you are feeling depressed... go talk to someone, you probably are. its very common.

Sad girls in grief
Sad boyDepression, or a depressed mood, may in everyday English refer to a state of melancholia, unhappiness or sadness, or to a relatively minor downturn in mood that may last only a few hours or days. This is generally seen as quite distinct from the diagnosis of clinical depression. However, if depressed mood lasts at least two weeks, and is accompanied by other symptoms that interfere with daily living, it may be seen as a symptom of clinical depression, dysthymia or some other diagnosable mental illness, or alternatively as sub-syndromal depression.

In the field of psychiatry, the word depression can also have this meaning of low mood but more specifically refers to a mental illness when it has reached a severity and duration to warrant a diagnosis, whether there is an obvious situational cause or not; see Clinical depression. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) states that a depressed mood is often reported as being: "... depressed, sad, hopeless, discouraged, or 'down in the dumps'." In a clinical setting, a depressed mood can be something a patient reports (a symptom), or something a clinician observes (a sign), or both.

A depressed mood is generally situational and reactive, and associated with grief, loss, or a major social transition. A change of residence, marriage, divorce, the break-up of a significant relationship, the death of a loved one, graduation, or job loss are all examples of instances that might trigger a depressed mood.

Depression is different than just being sad or unhappy. Depression does not let you go about your normal, daily life--everything seems too hard to do. Some people don't eat or sleep--others don't even shower. Some overeat, and some never want to get out of bed and dressed. Some cannot work, some cannot concentrate, and some can be of harm to themselves or others.

Depression needs to be diagnosed by a doctor (general MD, psychiatrist, counselor, therapist, etc.). Some depressed people must be on medication, some need to be in therapy, and some need both.

Depression can kill if left untreated, so it is very important to see a doctor as soon as possible.

You can read about depression at

http://www.about.com

type in "depression" in the search box that appears in the upper right hand corner of that page. You can take tests to see if you are depressed, you can read what people who are depressed have to say, you can even subscribe to a newsletter that will come to your email address each week if you want to. Just don't forget that you still need to see a doctor.

I hope that you will be feeling better really soon. :)

This depends on a set of generalized factors. It is possible to be one of two types of depression sufferers. I shall outline the corresponding indicators of each:

Depression, or a depressed mood, may in everyday English refer to a state of melancholia, unhappiness or sadness, or to a relatively minor downturn in mood that may last only a few hours or days.

Clinical depression (also called major depressive disorder, or sometimes unipolar when compared with bipolar disorder) is a state of intense sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive to an individual's social functioning and/or activities of daily living. Although a low mood or state of dejection that does not affect functioning is often colloquially referred to as depression, clinical depression is a clinical diagnosis and may be different from the everyday meaning of "being depressed".

In other words, if you think you are depressed all of the time, you probably are. Someone who is not depressed will often times have no thoughts of depression what-so-ever. If this has been continuing for a long time (weeks, months, or even years), or is interfering with your daily life, then you should see a counselor. Check around your neighborhood or city to locate a free counseling clinic...most everywhere has them. If there isn't one within your reach, check around for a counseling telephone chat line. There is always the option of a paid Psychologist. I advise seeing a psychologist first because they can determine if the problem is in need of medicinal assistance to lessen the symptoms so you can function in your day-to-day. There is no point in going on a med that you may not even need.

I hope this helps.

Do a search using the word depression(Yahoo, Google etc.). There are many websites where you can take a quick test or survey. If the results show signs of depression, print it out, make a doctors appointment and bring the printout with you. It will assist you in explaining how you feel. Good Luck!

Depression symptoms vary from person to person. If you think you are depressed then you should consult a doctor. They will be able to tell you if you are or not.
Good Luck : )

When you're really depressed, colors seem almost dull all of a sudden. You think/talk about death more than you normally did. You stop caring about what you look like, what people think about you, what your grades look like, etc...
