I am betting the farm you will get in, if your essay is as good as you predict; essays are the key. Michigan public education needs all the dollars it can get right now. They will take tuition money from a dead horse. No offense to you--that is directed at the poor budget circumstance.

Living in Michigan, where it is always Michigan or Michigan State that dozens of students want to go to (due to family allegiences) I can tell you that although Michigan State is easier to get into than Michigan, the standards have increased quite a bit recently. With the information you have provided, I would not say it is impossible, you definately have a chance, but your gpa might really hurt you. When it comes to looking at your gpa, universities recalculate it after taking out easy classes like art or drama or things like that, cutting it down to the core classe. Also, some schools make ap classes worth more gpa than normal classes, making it possible to get a 4.3 or whatever, universities take that away. You definately have a chance, but your gpa may make it considerbly more difficult to get in.

With a 23 ACT and 3.3 GPA, it's not a very strong case. But this is the average. You would fit into the lower tier of MSU's students. With you extracaricular activities and AP classes, I think you would get in with no problem, but a semester of Junior College wouldn't hurt.

If your family has the money, then by all means, go for it. You'll get in, but I can't see you getting any tuition breaks.

You'll need at least a 3.8. Its an open secret that the essay isn't used in deciding who gets into Michigan state. Sorry to disillusion you.
