Not at first. At the first battle of Manasas (Bull Run) Northern sympathizers came out to watch the battle and some actually had picnic lunches prepared. Once the battle got under way the Union was routed and the on-lookers ran away in fear. This killed any romantic notion about war.
The war was not about slavery officially until the Emancipation Proclomation. The North was fighting to keep the south in the USA and the South was fighting to leave.

Unfortunately, sometimes in war, the lines aren't so clear-cut that you can always say, "The other side is bad and evil, and we're the good guys." (And no, this is not a reference to the Iraq war; in that case, I think we're the good guys and Saddam and the insurgents are the bad guys)
Interesting fact: a Northerner once told Lincoln, "God is on our side." Lincoln responded: "I only pray that we are on HIS side."
(OK, so that's not the exact wording, but you get the idea.)
Contrary to what many people thought, the war wasn't about slavery, although that was a big part of the conflict. Actually, the South was fighting for states' rights, and the North was fighting for the Union. The South was fighting to defend their homes... the North was fighting to keep the Union together. Both sides had worthy causes, and both sides suffered terribly from the war. So I don't think you can easily divide it into black-and-white... it was more complex than that.
And, I'm pretty sure most people supported their side during the Civil War. One thing to understand- tension between the North and the South had been building up for a few decades, so war would pretty much inevitable. At that point, I think it was the only way to resolve differences.

It was a situation of idealism. The North felt that it was their duty to free the slaves. The South wanted to maintain their culture and lifestyle; much of which was brought from England with their "Class Culture".
BOTH felt equally as strong and obviously the North prevailed. The North may have prevailed, but the attitudes in the South still exist many years later.
The North may have won the war, but it could NOT change the attitudes of a certain culture.
I see your parallel and it is an EXCELLENT question!
I believe that the Middle East will be the same; we may beat them into submission, but the CULTURAL and RELIGIOUS attitudes will remain for generations.
I believe that the solution is NOT beating them into submission but through education and a better way of life.
Our troops are used to GUARD construction projects, schools and the building of an economy where EVERY person has an opportunity to live a life with food on the table, self-esteem and NO FEAR of being drug from their home and executed in the street because they thought the wrong thing.
It is VERY easy to manipulate a hungry and fearful person and that is what the power seeking zealots are doing to raise themselves to a position of power and self-importance. They are simply climbing up the backs of their followers to achieve a life of their own or to maintain a culture and life that they understand. They are simply resistant to positive change and education because educated people would figure out quickly that they were being manipulated and rebel.
I have NO research to back this up, but you might want to look at some the the BIG LEADERS in the South. If my theory is correct, then you will find that they had the largest plantations, the greatest wealth and the greatest number of slaves. They also had the greatest amount to LOOSE.

The North viewed the war as the only way to save the nation (united we stand, divided we fall, etc). The South viewed the war as a fight to save their way of life.
