I'm female and 24...been diagnosed bi-polar since I was 16, and yeah there were a lot of tests. If you have a counselor, do you have a regular psychiatrist, or just a counselor? Are you taking any meds? If you are feeling depressed, maybe your meds need to be adjusted, or maybe you need some anti-depressants added to your meds. If that isn't an issue, it's a possibility that you could just need to have a mood stabalizer added into the mix somewhere. I might be able to help a little more if I knew whether or not you were already on meds.

That's pretty much how I handle mine to tell the truth. If I don't take my meds, I can be a real *****, whether I am on the upside or the downside. I am kind of an oddity for my doctor though, because I don't cycle very often, and I pretty much stay hypomanic all the time regardless of the med levels. Currently I am taking 2000mg of Depekote ER, 200mg of Topamax, 200mg of Lamictal, 750mg of Serequel, and 100mg of Trasydone a day. It keeps me pretty level but no matter what the dosages are, I won't ever really be closer to what they consider the "normal" range. When I do go through a cycle, it doesn't usually last long for me, but it is pretty bad. I won't get out of bed for weeks, and if I do, I won't change out of my pjs, I have to be reminded to shower, to eat, to do just about anything, because when I'm on the downside I just don't care.

That's about it for me I think. I'll tell you what though, if you have any kind of specific question you want to ask me or you think of anything later, you can email me if you'd like to, cause I've been exactly where you are right now. Good luck.

I am a female and 49. I have been bipolar since I was 11. I started taking Serenity about 8 months ago and it is the best thing I ever did for my illness. You don't need a prescription and it works without all the side effects like gaining weight. Also I have not had any serious problems with depression like I used to.
You really need to have meds to have a chance at a more normal life because you will not be able to do it without it.
Before I found out that I was bipolar I was self medicating and that only made matters worse.

Im 26 male and bipolar, my episodes manifest s long severe depressions, Im on a 2 year hell ride where I lost everything and had to move in back with my mom, I don'y respond well to meds so all I take now is some lithium but I think Im going to cancel that too, Im at the point were I am going to really look t my life nd try non medication approach and set goals and have some sort of support, My depressions are literally hell, were I will wake up one day and not know wht day of the week it is and realize I haven't showered in a week, I came to the conclusion if my life is going to by ll suffering ,,so be it, I will fight it to the end and never think of killing myself, Now to try not to kill the people who think my condition is all bs for lazy people,,,,,that will be a different challenge

I myself am bipolar 2 and I have borderline personality disorder. I am a 26 year old female and I too have suffered from this since I was 17. The way I handle my depression may sound a little odd but it works for me.. First of all I never hide the fact that I am "CRAZY" :)- What I tell people is: I don't suffer from insanity I enjoy it.. I learned to embrace my flaws I all so went off my antidepressants and stopped seeing my therapist. And I hate to say it but since I took control back over myself I have never done better. I use to cut as well and I just had to dig down deep and find my inner strength which had all ways been there. Once I found it I haven't let go. Good luck to you and keep your head up, everything will work out eventually you just have to stay strong and hang in there. You have my best wishes :)

Just take the medication prescribed and you will be all set. Its a chemical imbalance, you have to take medication...prescribed or unprescribed.
