I heard if you get a samoyed you need to make sure their parents have good hip scores because they can get hip dyplasia. I once remember having an article on it but now I can't find it. Can some-one give me a brief rundown on it or lots of detail if your able or just a good website.
Thanks

Hip Dysplasia has been diagnosed in more than 100 breeds of dog. Fortunately, studies have shown that the chances of progeny being hip dysplastic are significantly decreased when both parents have normal hips.

The degree of Hip Dysplasia is indicated by a scoring system for each hip, the lower the score, the better the hips. Hip dysplasia can be progressively eliminated by only using dogs with normal hips (as determined by x-ray) for breeding programs.

Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is the most common heritable orthopaedic problem seen in dogs. It affects virtually all breeds of dogs, but is especially problematic in large and giant breeds. CHD develops into a degenerative condition (osteoarthritis) of the hip joints.

Conventionally, CHD is diagnosed radiographically by the presence of degenerative changes and/or subluxation of the hip. The role of subluxation is crucial in the development of CHD but is often camouflaged on the most commonly used radiographic projection of the hips.

Radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis confirms secondary changes of CHD, characterised by periarticular osteophyte formation (bone spurs), signs of subchondral bony sclerosis and bony remodelling. The current system used for scoring radiographs for hip dysplasia in Australia is based the system devised and used by the BVA/KC. There are nine criteria.

Scores between 0 and 6 are allocated for all criteria, except the caudal acetabular edge, for which the maximum score is 5.

Higher scores indicate greater degrees of radiographic abnormality.

The scores for the right and left joints are added to give a total hip score.

What country are you talking about??? The evaluation system is different for each country.
You then need to find out what the system is for your country. The breeder or a good vet should be able to tell you.

You need to see copies of the OFA or PennHip hip tests..that is what hip scores are... It is VERY important that most breeds have these x-rays done & certified BEFORE they are bred.
