Theoretically isn't the Iraq war considered WWIII?

Iraq is not a world war. Some, even former speaker of the house newt gingrich has said that it is. It is, most assuredly, not another world war. Some people's reasoning is that if a war is a war, and is fought around the world, it is a world war. This is not true. France fought wars in the past which started in Europe, and ended up in entirely different continents, and they were not considered a world war.

By definition a world war is a war that involves major industrialized nations.

Well, WWI used to be called The Great War...

I think it would require actual support and unity world over. The U.S. kind of started this one (remember when the U.N. didn't want to go to war with Iraq, but we did it anyway?). Sure we got "support" from other countries, but that was all politics, other countries trying to stay on our good side or trying to win our affection by sending troops. But when has there ever been a near equal part of non-U.S. soldiers in Iraq? It's always been U.S. vs. Iraq, and now Iran on the down-low.

So technically, we're the Germany of this whole deal. I mean, Germany sort of started WWII when Hitler decided to take over the world, then other countries got involved to stop him. Now we decided to take over Iraq (so to speak) and Middle-Eastern countries are now uniting to get us out.

What a quagmire...

When there are multiple countries fighting the same war.I think that each opposing forces must have a number of allies with them (ex: Germany and Japan vs U.S. U.K. Russia)
The Iraq war is just a coalition led by the U.S. against Insurgents in Iraq. I would not call that WW3. However if we suddenly went to war with Iran, China, North Korea than I would call that WW3.

Friend, call it any number you like, its on your doorstep and you had better wake up. MY war is to tell people that we do not need war there is enough for everyone we do not need to have vast wealth to live and be happy. Competitive greed (filthy luchre) is the cause. But then ask me for bread NO PROBLEM. Ask for some cash, GET LOST. So what am I.

It has to affect a majority of the world's countries. Usually spanning multiple continents.
