Despite what Soulsearcher says, a lot of us aren't poor and we certainly aren't brainwashed. I spent 13 years in the Army and National Guard. A lot of my relatives were in the military and fought in various wars. I wasn't poor, and I knew what I was getting into when I enlisted. I joined to serve my country, learn a trade (which I did), make some money for college (which I did) and see the world (I lived in Europe for 3 years, it was awesome). The Army made me more worldly and helped me to grow up a lot, and I learned a lot about myself and my capabilities.

Many people I know joined after graduating highschool. They were pretty blatantly clear on that it was just because they had "too many problems here." People claim it's some way that they can get discipline and structure, but most of the time, the reality is that they just want to run away from their lives. Somehow they think it will rid of their self inflicted issues. It's too bad. They don't fully understand the concept of what the American military is, and what the true reason for joining it should be.
Not to say that's the intention behind all younger people who join, but that's mostly what I've seen in my life.

I have a friend from high school who is in the Marines, and on his third tour of duty in Iraq having volunteered to return each time without waiting for a request from the government. I have an extended family member who is also in the Marine Corps and was just recently featured on the Fox News Channel, he is now home, but was embedded with Iraqi police forces. He said at one point it was so bad over there that he used to sleep with his pistol on his chest because they never knew if members of the police force were really disguised insurgents.
They all believe that if democracy and strong economies are spread throughout the middle east, and people are allowed to learn new things and be enlightened, instead of just what their governments and clerics tell them to know, that terrorism will cease to be as powerful as it is today.

Some people are patriots while others are content to merely pay taxes to feel like good Americans. After 9/11 many people felt the calling and went. There are those who are not suited to military service and help in ways they can, apathetic slobs, cowards, and patriots. It just depends in which group you fall.

I joined to be able to pay for school.. One of my best friends joined for the same reason. Another one joined because it was her lifelong dream. Everyone joins for differant reasons.
I've been deployed to Iraq but luckily nobody was seriously harmed from my unit when I went, so no I don't know anyone who died...
