I've lost contact with reality Im 19 years old now and it first happend when I was 14. I felt a gust of wind and some kind of electric shock through my body and from that day on I knew somthing was wrong I cant feel I dont have emotions I cant gap out or zone in on things my mind is constantly going 24/7 My brain is even fixated on how im walking somtimes. Then when I smoke weed all of this goes away but I become a 100% diffrent person my actions/reactions change. I guess they dont change they just appear! And I can feel. I dont wanna live like this anymore why should I have to?. I think I just suffer from repression ive had a messed up childhood really bad actully. and stepfather was no help. anyways I went to get help from a pychatris I did an intake session and they say I dont need a pyschatris or pyscholigist or whatever. sorry about the typing I just wanna get this out.

Thanks

Hi. I'm sorry you're having to go through this. How do you know you've lost contact with reality? Are you able to function in your life ok--such as holding a job, going to school, being in relationships (family and otherwise). It's not unusual for a person to believe that they "can't feel" or experience emotions if they've had a turbulent or abusive childhood. It's kind of how our unconscious protects us from all the emotional pain.

It sounds like you could use a good counselor, perhaps through a community mental health agency. Maybe a psychiatrist was a little over-kill? You might try a social worker or counselor (look in the blue pages of your phone book, under "mental health"). I felt much the same way at your age, and after looking around, I found a really good counselor who listened to everything I said, and helped me understand myself better. I felt crazy---but, I wasn't truly crazy. And you're right--you shouldn't have to live this way. It's very uncomfortable and painful.

You might want to sit down with your phone book and a cell phone, take a deep breath, and just start calling mental health agencies or local hospitals, and just ask questions. Don't be afraid. There are lots of people out there who are trained to help people with all kinds of problems.

I'll keep you in my prayers tonight. Don't give up! Keep trying to get help, no matter what!

Unless you were struck by lightening, your problems did'nt
ride in on a gust of wind. It's hard to imagine that a health
professional would'nt try and help you unless you didn't
fully reveal the extent of your isolation...the fact that you
feel better when you smoke is a given but this is just
putting a bandaid on an injury. Pot, like alcohol acts as a
depressant so the more you do, the more depressed you
get, even though you may feel better at the time. Contact
a de-tox counselling organization and perhaps they can
refer you to someone who will be able to help you. Don't
judge all health professionals by your previous experience...
you just need to find the right one. Lots of luck to you,
hang in there.

First, get off drugs. That is a start. You only THINK it helps, it is probably messing you up more.

Second, if you know you have repressed memories and a messed up childhood, go see a counselor and get some talk therapy. You don't need a psychiatrist, they are usually there for people with major mental disorders. I think you just need to discuss your past issues with someone and begin to work on your present life.

You are now an adult that makes the decisions for your life. If you choose to make good ones, then your life will show it. When you make bad ones, you will regret them. Make good choices, get some help and quit the weed.

Have you considered a second opinion? You know how you feel and someone needs to hear what you are saying. My son has serious mental health issues and the first time I took him for help it was a disaster the intake worker and my son did not communicate well at all. The second time with another therapist it was better and now my son is getting the treatment he needs to feel better. Do not give up.

Sounds to me like you need a big change somewhere in your life. Get a dramatic change when it comes to your looks or just get out of your environment if you can. Remember that people have the self ability to become better. Try doing some yoga or meditation. Find something to awaken your mind. Your emotions shut down when there was too much pain some point in your life. My dear, you need to find an outlet. Same age.

Try going to a regular doctor and see what they say. Sometimes they can steer you in the right direction.

Good luck.
