He was pompous and arrogant. he used his wealth and influence to gain position, not his skills. He did often hang out in the pilots club in Berlin from my understanding.

Goering had always been kinda big, in the later years he let him self go, he became head of the Luftwaffe but was too large to even fit in a plane.

Also my guess is he probably became separated from the rest of the pilots when he joined the Nazi party. Most pilots were aristocrats and the Nazi movement was attempting to eliminate their status in society.
