I use my middle name only when at work.
I work in a call centre and there are people (general trouble makers) who I dont want to know where I am working.
I also use it sometimes when guys try to pick me up in my local neighbourhood. I tell them my middle name so they cant go back and start talking about me to their friends - they are the type of people that I don't want to have knowing my name.

I use part of my first name and part of my middle name. It makes it a bother when your doing official paperwork and applying for things that use your real name but I prefer it that way.
I'm sure a ton of other people do the same.

Lots of people do it. You'll frequently say names along the lines of "P. James Doe" and so forth.
