Have to agree with the others. Crate training is key. I have two beagles and when I first got them it was all about crate training. You can't get all emotional about putting them in the crate and feeling sorry for them. Once you get them in the "hey this is my den, I can't poop in here" mode you can probably get rid of the crate. My crates are in the attic now. Read up on crate training. The crate can't be a punishment place. It should be a place the dog wants to go to, someplace safe and comfy.

As for running away, beagles/bassets are going to do that. You either have to keep them on a secure lead or a very well fenced in yard.

Give the dog chew toys. Use bitter apple to spray items you do not want him chewing. If you catch him chewing something he isn't supposed to give a squirt of the bitter apple to his snout and a stern "no".

As for sleeping all over the furniture... Good luck. Dogs want to sleep/sit where the humans do. I have seen some beagles trained to stay off couches/beds. Bitter apple being sprayed on them every time they are found on the couch/bed seems to work for some.

You should use a crate. That will help house break the dog because most dogs will not soil where they sleep. A crate will keep him from destroying your house and he should get no unsupervised freedom until you can trust him not to soil inside or chew things in the house. Every time he get on the furniture push him off and tell him off. This dog needs some disciplining, it is not okay for the dog to run the house it is your house and your dog must obey. I think some obedience classes will do both of you some good. It will teach you how to correct the dog and the dog will learn to respect you.

crate train your dog.. and remember,, you got a dog that was specically bred for following its nose, burrowing in the ground and running and barking.... you should have done your homework and gotten a dog better suited for your lifestyle,,, unless you are a hunter.... geesh
