The 995 9mm Carbine, contrary to many "gun snobs" is an excellent urban defense choice.

Several factors back this up:

While the 9mm round is considered "weak", a full metal jacket combined with the increased velocity granted by the carbine's extended barrel increases the muzzle velocity of a 995's round to a speed faster than a 357 magnum round! This makes it a very efficent and easily shot round under 100 yards (wich is perfect for any urban or home environment). In balisitic tests a bullet with this configuration at that velocity will penetrate level II body armour nearly 50% of the time under 50 yards. Then again, if you have home invaders wearing body armor....you've got more problems than wich carbine to choose....

The only downside of a carbine is the issue of wall penetration. The idea is to place a shot accruately in a target without going anywhere else. The carbine is a VERY accurate weapon wich makes it perfect for targeting, but it's bennifit is also it's flaw. The increased velocity of the round also means it will go further than a pistol fired round. This means that drywall, windows, doors and even light brick might not stop the round and might endanger your neighbours. Remember: Part of being a civil gun owner is knowing the repercussions of your actions beyond the conflict.

If you REALLY need stopping power over 100 yards, you really should either move to a safer neighbourhood or take a second look at why you need to shoot further than a football field for "home defense"

Jim {the father of the HP carbine} is a good guy to talk to and is very helpful. You can not use the after market +10 mags in a Hi-Point as the top round will rub on the bottom of the bolt and eat it. The 9mm HP is a very good firearm for the price. They are dead nut accurate backed up with the best warranty there if is and are a load of fun to shoot with very little recoil and noise. $20.00 for a mag is not that bad of a price when you compare it with the price of other mags up to $24.00, CZ52 mags used $16-$18.00. Mossberg .22 42M a mags up to $80.00, Taurus 9mm 17 round mags $40.00 and Glock mags $30.00 so $20.00 is right in line with everyone else. As for the cons the sling is on the wrong side .

Sorry to be a stickler, but it's a carbine and not a rifle. It fires a pistol round, so it can never be a rifle.

They are OK. Get the 9mm as it's a lot cheaper to shoot. You will not need the .40s extra power because really it's a toy and not a serious defense weapon. That said, they are fun and it's amazing how....well... wierd they are. Have fun and safe shooting!

in my experence they are functional guns but i find them awkward to handle and IMHO the ejection port is too small. i prefer a marlin camp carbine or the ruger carbine. with good ammo a 9mm carbine is a reasonable home defense weapon.

I would like to get one in .40 S&W. My wife does not like the recoil of the .40 in my Glock 23, but she could handle that little carbine just fine.

while fun to shoot, its really not practical, depending on your situation for wanting/having it. theirs better home defense weapons (shotgun, even a pistol would probably be more efficient) it isnt a true rifle, you cant hunt with it.........so whats the point, if u have extra cash and just want to shoot it, by all means, but if u think its gonna be ur personal defense weapon or somethign like that, i'd consider something else
