A coworker of mine lost her sense of taste about 4 months ago just out of the blue. She thinks maybe she has a nasal polyp...what else could it be? her sense of smell is still fine.

A lot of things can make a person lose their sense of taste. Agiing can do it; as you grow older, the production of saliva decreases, giving you 'dry mouth'. It can happen to younger people too, though. If you have mouth sores, tooth decay, or poor daily mouth care; certain drugs like chemotherapy and radiotherapy to treat cancer ... and poor nutrition ... it can all contribute. Diseases affecting the mouth can also be the culprit, such as periodontal disease.

The biggest concern is that your coworker could get ahold of something she shouldn't ... food that is contaminated or spoiled. If she can't taste the difference, she can easily end up hospitalized for food poisoning, or worse ...

She should see a doctor as soon as possible. This is serious!
